MOVEMENT, THE OCEAN & MEMORIES

Filled with nostalgia from growing up by the beach with warm sunshine and my perceptions of being an immigrant, I have a body of work of textile art. I use materials as tools to illustrate my memories, sense of self and stories that relates to my way of engaging with my surroundings. I used research to start my journey, following the Italian diaspora in 1985, specifically the journey of Italians who went to Brazil, such as my family ancestors. I then used this format as a way of understanding and marking my own move to France and later on to Scotland, which I now call home. Impassioned by immigration as a subject and countless personal stories, I have circulated and settled on the themes of 'sea' and 'memory'. They act as central elements to express how I feel about being an immigrant and how I connect to nature.

I observe how materials behave and relate to their own shapes and stories, and then interweaving this with my own messages. I look for lightness and contrast and somehow, also curiosity. In many of my recent works, I benefit from how light moves across the pieces, enhancing how we connect to them, therefore creating new stories that unfold with every viewing of the work.
